IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bobby
Griffin
June 12, 1923 – April 24, 2013
Bobby A. Griffin, age 89, passed away April 24, 2013. Bobby Alvin Griffin was born June 12, 1923 in Winslow, AZ to the late Robert Allen and Estella Lewis of North Carolina. She was the youngest child of five children. Four siblings preceded her in death: a brother that died after birth, sisters Olive, Rena and Irene (twins). She grew up in Winslow, Arizona with her family. She graduated high school then went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Arizona State University. She played the clarinet in the ASU Marching Band and also helped start a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in which she was a Golden Life Member. After college she completed her student teaching and was hired to teach grades K through 3 at Dunbar School in the Phoenix Elementary School District, District #1. In Bobby's early teaching years, she met ("Joe") Joseph P. Griffin, who preceded her in death. They were married 40 years and had one child, Bobbie Jo (Johnson). She continued to teach kindergarten and was a devoted wife and mother. Bobby was called by many "a teacher before her time". She felt that she could teach those Kindergarten children to read and write. She often got in trouble and was told to stick to coloring, painting and just read to them. But she continued to teach reading and writing whenever she could. In 1990 Bobby retired from Dunbar School after 44 years. She continued as an active member with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., working in her Church as a member on the Session, sang in the choir, taught in the Head start Program and taught Praise Dancing. In addition to that, Bobbie liked to travel, was an active member of the Urban League and participated in a number of other community service initiatives, including the Martin Luther King Foundation. Bobby accepted the Lord at a young age. She still loved the Lord, as one of her last phrases she stated before she could no longer speak was, "I know my God loves me". She always drew strength and guidance from her person Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Bobby leaves behind one daughter, Bobbie Jo Johnson (Charles Sr.), Charles Johnson, Sr.; four grandchildren, Charles Johnson, Jr. (Uyon), Michelle Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Angela Johnson; seven great grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, Miles Johnson, Aaliyah Johnson, Amani Wade, Charles Michael Jayden Johnson, Alyssa Johnson, Gabriel Johnson; a host of nieces and nephews.
