Obituary

Betty Lou (Carter) Jenkins, 93, from Richmond, Indiana, was born on November 29, 1932, in Alton, Kentucky to Ira Bailey Carter and Birdella Grace (Fife) Carter. At a young age, she chose to follow Christ and was baptized. She attended Mount Moriah Baptist Church as well as Christ Tabernacle Apostolic Church.

Betty attended Richmond Senior High School and was the class secretary. She later received her GED. She was a fabulous cook and cooked for a United States Senator H. A. Coffin's family and Mary E. Hill Nursing Home. Betty was a Wayne County social worker and worked at ALCOA. She ended her career as a nursing assistant and qualified medical assistant at Golden Rule Nursing Home. Betty was a caregiver through and through, taking care of family, friends and neighbors.

Betty married Willard Jenkins in high school and later Glenn E. Smith; both predeceased her. She passed away on February 22, 2026, and is remembered by daughters Charmaine (Jimmy) Kirtz and Glenda A. Smith, and her sister Laura Robinson (97). Her daughter Deborah (Wright) Barnes, parents, four brothers— Ira Cater, Kenneth Carter, Eugene Cater, Johnny Carter— and two sisters, Beulah Miller (her twin) and Lydia Williams, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her grandchildren—Dion Wright, Tyson Jenkins, Keiya (Kevin) Myles, Lester Wright, Brent Wright, Pedro Sanchez, Robert Right Jr., Miah Rouse, Jasmine and Tiffany Johnston—along with ten great-great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Betty will feel her absence profoundly. Her life exemplified both unwavering faith and the grace of selfless service. Glenda A. Smith is grateful to aides, relatives, and friends for their support and kindness throughout these past months and during this time of loss.

No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned.  The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled.
