As an empowering woman of faith devoted to family, friends, and those in need, Barbara truly lived with a servant's heart. Born November 9, 1941 to Atlay and Leo Bush in Bessemer Alabama, Barbara was one of fifteen children. Raised in a Christian household, Barbara was often driven by her faith. It was at the precious age of thirteen that she decided to accept Christ as her Lord and savior, and was baptized at Oak Grove Baptist Church. She would spend her adult years as a devout disciple of Christ spreading the Gospel with love. It was her love of God and strong sense of self that enabled her to surpass color-line boundaries in a Jim Crow South and pursued an education at Westfield High School where she graduated in 1957. It was here that she developed an appreciation for the art of healing and providing comfort and care to the sick and shut-in. In her later years, she would honor this calling as a surgical technician. During her travels to Cincinnati, OH, Barbara met the love of her life, Herschel Stone, or her "honey" as she would always refer to him. Barbara Jean Bush and Herschel Stone decided to wed on September 9, 1961. Embarking on their new journey together, they relocated and settled in Harlem, New York where they had three children, Saundra, Lamont, and Kenneth. As a wife and mother, Barbara exuded steadfast love and devotion and was supportive, protective, and nurturing–characteristics and traits that she also applied to her work. On October 15, 1971, Barbara received her license as a surgical technician in the Hemodialysis Unit for The New York Hospital. She dedicated twenty nine years to providing services for patients, surgeons, and other medical professionals to prepare for pending surgical procedures. After years of loyal and dedicated service, Barbara decided to retire from the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation in December of 1999. In her retirement years, she spent most of her time investing in her family and her church home of over thirty years at St. Johns Baptist Church. When she moved with her daughter and son to Cincinnati, OH she enjoyed quiet reflection while sitting on the porch in the open air, people watching, arts and crafts, and attending her new church home, Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she became a member on February 5, 2006. Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Atlay and Leo Bush; her husband, Herschel Stone; 5 brothers, and 3 sisters. She is survived by daughters, Saundra Chavis and Tamu Morris; sons, Lamont Stone and Kenneth (Theo) Stone; 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn (Charles) Grant of Brooklyn, N.Y and Gloria (Harry) Respass of Williamston, NC; 4 brothers, Leo (Beatrice) Bush Jr of Savannah, GA, Lewis (Ivory) Bush of Arizona, Lonnie (May) Bush of Windsor, NC, and Leonard Bush of Brooklyn, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues who will forever cherish her memory. Life is but a Stopping Place Life is but a stopping place, A pause in what's to be, A resting place along the road, to sweet eternity. We all have different journeys, Different paths along the way, We all were meant to learn some things, but never meant to stay... Our destination is a place, Far greater than we know. For some the journey's quicker, For some the journey's slow. And when the journey finally ends, We'll claim a great reward, And find an everlasting peace, Together with the lord Author unknown Visitation is from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm, on , Monday, January 11, 2016, at the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 3655 Harvey Avenue, Cincinnati (45229).
