Missionary Alberta Josephine Burton, nee Lewis, was born on September 22, 1923 in Nashville, Tennessee to Odie B. Lewis Sr. and Sophie McDonald Lewis. She departed this life on Sunday October 26, 2014 at her home in Beaufort, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; William Timothy Burton, four brothers; James Arthur Lewis. Odie B. Lewis Jr., Edward Lewis and Albert Lewis; one sister, Myrtle Lewis Hurley, two brother-in-laws; Andrew Canty and Earlee Murray; one sister-in-law, Mary Lewis and great-granddaughter, Marissa Burton. She met the love of her life, William T. Burton and married him on January 17, 1942. to this union was born four children; Nadine Burton Lackey; William Anthony Burton, Brenda Lee Burton and Arlene Burton., She was a devoted mother who loved her children and encouraged them to excel. Though she had an 8th grade education, she believed in higher education. She reminded her children that if they got it in their head, no one could take it if from them. She instilled in each of her children the importance of a strong work ethic, integrity, compassion and the need for personal salvation. From an early age, she loved and pursued a deep relationship with God. She left the Methodist Church that she called home and received baptism in the Holy Ghost under the pastoral leadership of her mother-in-law, the late Beulah Smith Burton at the house of God Church. She was a missionary in deed and not just title. Her passion was to make known The Lord Jesus Christ to her family and community, Yes, she stood before the church to ''bring a lesson'' but her life was the greatest lesson she ever taught line by line and precept upon precept. She was a prayer warrior interceding on behalf of her family, friends, acquaintances, her employers and the leadership of the government. She actively worked in the church to raise money for the building of current location of the House of God Church. She opened her home to saints traveling from Florida to Ohio for the Assembly. She handled to church's finances. She let her light so shine before men that they may see her good works and glorify the Father in Heaven. Her life was the drawing card that led people to The Lord. She was ambassador for Christ well representing His Kingdom. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory tow sisters, Minister Naomi Lewis Canty and Erma Jean Murray; four children, Nadine Lackey(Virgil Sr.) William Burton (Wendell), Brenda Burton and Arlene Burton; eight grandchildren, Virgil Lackey Jr., Alicia Burton, Erika Burton-Mendez, Anika Lackey, Ingrid Burton, Tera Gadson, Ashley Gadson and Anthony Burton; eight great-grandchildren, Jesyca Cook, Virgil Lackey III, Joshua Lackey, Jordan Mendez, Christopher Lackey, Imani Burton, Joshua Mendez and Zaya Mendez; three great grandchildren, Cali Lackey, Ashlyn Cook and Noah Lackey as well as a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, saints and friends.
