Addie Josephine Scruggs was born on November 16, 1935, in Alabama, to Jency Lee Crawford and James Lenzy. On August 25, 2026, Addie departed this life in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of 90, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of faith, family, love, and countless memories.

Though born in Alabama, Addie grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, a city that would remain an important part of her story throughout her life. In the late 1960s, she moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she made a life for herself and her family for many years. She eventually returned home to Cincinnati in the 1980s, where she remained.

Addie briefly attended school before entering a life of work centered around something that came naturally to her: caring for others. She spent much of her working years in nursing homes, caring for the elderly and individuals living with mental illness. Her work required patience, compassion, and a willingness to serve others, qualities that were also evident in the way she lived her everyday life.

In the 1950s, Addie married Charles Scruggs. Their journey together took its own unique path, and in 1989, the two chose one another again and remarried. Together, they shared a story spanning decades. Addie was the proud mother of three children: the late Johnny Lenzy, Reginald Scruggs, and Sharon Wade.

To know Addie was to know a woman with a personality all her own.

She was outgoing, expressive, encouraging, and never shy about sharing what was on her heart. Above all else, **Addie loved Jesus.** She was a God-fearing Christian woman whose faith was not something she simply spoke about. It was something she carried with her everywhere she went. She loved her church family and believed deeply in ministering to others. Whether you were family, a friend, or simply someone who crossed her path and needed encouragement, Addie was always willing to offer a kind word, share some wisdom, or stop what she was doing and pray for you.

And if you were a young woman, Addie was especially going to make sure you knew your worth.

She strongly believed that a woman should respect herself, carry herself with dignity, and never settle for less than she deserved. She could deliver a lesson with equal parts wisdom and humor, often reminding young women:

“You gotta pay the cost to be the boss. Until then, keep your legs crossed.”

That was Addie: faithful, funny, straightforward, and always ready with something to say.

Addie also had a creative spirit and loved to write, especially poetry. She enjoyed taking pictures and having her picture taken, leaving her family with many captured memories from throughout the years. Most of all, she enjoyed the people around her and found ways to express her love, faith, and personality in everything she did.

Family was an important part of Addie's story. Her siblings were the late Jency Lee Hoard, the late James “Junior” Lenzy, Naomi Jackson, Inez Phillips, and the late Barbara Jean Mincy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jency Lee Crawford and Shadrack Lee Askew; her beloved son, Johnny Lenzy; her grandson, Mario Lenzy; and her siblings, Jency Lee Hoard, James “Junior” Lenzy, and Barbara Jean Mincy.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, **Charles Scruggs**; her children, **Reginald Scruggs (Portia) and Sharon Wade (Lester)**; her grandchildren, **Lil Johnny Jr., Antoine Lenzy, Micah Wade, Lil Reggie Jr., Miah Wade, Raven Lenzy, and Mariah Wade**; her sisters, **Naomi Jackson and Inez Phillips**; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended family members, friends, and her beloved church family.

For 90 years, Addie filled the lives around her with prayer, encouragement, wisdom, laughter, and love. More than anything, she left her family lessons to live by and an example of what it meant to hold firmly to your faith.

One of the greatest was rooted in the scripture she held close to her heart:

“Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Addie believed in loving people. She believed in praying for people. She believed in encouraging people. She believed in telling the truth, even when that truth came with a little humor attached.

Her family will miss her voice, her prayers, her advice, her humor, and the unmistakable personality that made Addie who she was. The faith she shared, the wisdom she gave, and the love she poured into those around her will continue through the generations that follow her.

Her life was a testimony of faith, service, family, and love, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Walker Funeral Home - Walnut Hills Chapel, 2625 Gilbert Avenue, Cincinnati (45206). The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 11:00 am. Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy she leaves behind.

She will be laid to rest at Spring Grove Cemetery.
