Wiley West Obituary

Wiley West, Sr. was born August 28, 1928 to the late William and Daisy Belle (Lewis) West in Waynesboro, Georgia.  He departed his earthly life on September 20, 2018 at 11:15 am at The Jewish Hospital at the age of 90 after a lengthy illness.

The family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in February of 1936 and soon joined The Revelation Missionary Baptist Church.  Wiley was baptized at Revelation in 1938 under the leadership of Reverend Robinson.

Wiley attended 6th District Elementary School, Bloom Junior High School and graduated from Old Woodward High School in 1948.

Wiley served in the United States Army from November 1950 to October, 1952 during the Korean Conflict, he was stationed in Texas and Germany and was honorably discharged.

Wiley was united in Holy Matrimony to Esther M. Walker on January 26, 1957.  To this union three children were born.

Wiley was employed with the United States Postal Service as a Mail Handler in several different departments with his last position weighing bulk mail in the Weigher’s Office on Dalton Street.  He retired from the US Postal Service in 1989.  He received many awards while employed by the Postal Service; 2000 hours of Sick Leave Pin, 25, 30, and 35 year service pins.  He was also nominated for the Employee of the Year Award.

In 1969, Wiley began Deacon Training under the leadership of the Reverend Lewis Griffin.  He was ordained near the end of 1969.  During his tenure as a deacon, he served as the Chairman of the Deacon board for several years. His Chair extended from Rev. Daniel T. Smith through Rev. Russell Collins.  He also taught Bible Study Classes, Vacation Bible School, and was the Deacon in charge of the Mission.  He had also sung in the original Pastor’s Chorus.

He was a great father and family man with many talents.  He was excellent in math, mechanics, electrical work, plumbing, cooking, and anything else that needed to be done in or around the house.  He enjoyed taking the family to Post Office picnics, sporting events, and was an avid boxing fan.  He would tell you himself that he had lived a good life. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Esther M. West, his mother and father, William and Daisy West, his sisters Doris West and Arleen Crawford, great nephew Kendall Dudley, mother and father in law, Fanny and Benjamin Walker, sister in law and brother in law Ella L. and Donald Segar, brother in laws Benjamin, Jr., and Joseph D. Walker, and brother in law Harold Shearer.

He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter Michelle Renee, son, Wiley (Patricia) West, Jr, and daughter Karen P. (Melvin) West-Steele, grandson William N. West, great-grand son Chase William West-McCann, sisters Lula Shearer and Shirley Thompson, brother in law Odell Crawford, brother and sister in law Anthony and Joyce Walker and brother and sister in law Michael and Elizabeth Walker, his two oldest friends Dr. Mattie Patton and Mrs. Georgia Lee Johnson, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and  other extended family members and friends. 

Visitation is from 9:00 am until 10:00 am, on  Saturday, September 29, 2018, at the Revelation Missionary Baptist Church, 1556 John Street, Cincinnati  (45214).  The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 10:00 am.

Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45232.
