Petroleum Maye Obituary

After a long illness, Petroleum Maye passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at the age of 84, at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Formerly of Coatopa, Alabama, he transplanted his family to create a better life for them.

Petroleum, “Pete,” as his loved ones knew him, was a hard working man. He worked for the Cincinnati Milacron, until he retired at the age of 64. He also held a second job in the evenings to make sure he could support his family in the way he wanted them to live. He worked hard so his family could live well, but it was the struggles he faced as a  young man that gave him his motivation.  After middle school, he gave up his education to work in the sawmills of Alabama, and became the caretaker of his younger siblings. He had to self educate himself so he could manage his affairs. After retirement, he started his own lawn care service so he could continue to live the life he had become accustomed to.  Pete was a proud man who never asked anyone for anything.

Pete was a Deacon at his church for many years and enjoyed making phone calls, visiting homes, nursing home facilities  and hospitals to check on the sick and bereaved members of his congregation. He was an honest and trustworthy treasurer for the church and performed many other duties for the church unselfishly. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and his activities as a Mason.

Pete was a loving father, blessed with five daughters. He raised them with a “no nonsense” approach because he understood the challenges of raising children through the hard lessons he learned in his life's experiences.

Pete leaves the joy of his memories to his loving wife of 64 years, Carrie, and his five children, Patricia, Deborah, Shirley Mason-Gilmore (Albert), Brenda Maye-Wilson (Frederick), Valerie. Three grandchildren, Nikeya, Davida, and ShirDa'. Six great-grandchildren, Diamond, Dominique, DaMarcus, DaShawn, Vaughndel and Cahlid.

He was preceded in death by his parents Felix and Zora Maye, his brother, Jeremiah Maye, and his sister Lola Maye. He also leaves three sisters, Lucyrene Dunnom, Rosieanna Brinkley, Ophelia Campbell and four brothers, Matthew Maye (Paulette), Felix Maye (Malinda), James Maye (Jane) of Massachusetts, John Maye (Barbara) of Texas. He leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
